Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport No.3

Tomos Hales and Hayley Wells continued their dominance at the head of the Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport in Round 3, held on an overcast and chilly evening with just the lightest of northerly winds for riders to contend with. Hales took his third win in a row to make it a maximum 18 points under his belt with a fine effort of 21 minutes 34 seconds, well over a minute ahead of the chasing field with Chris Halford taking runner-up spot in 22:40 and Oli Freeman a further eight seconds back.

Hales now has a commanding 9 point advantage over Wells in the Overall standings, but once again Wells was unbeatable in the Women’s competition, opening up an eight point lead with a fine 23:44 for 5th place overall among an 18-strong field.

In the Road Bike Series it’s much closer with Rich Smith taking over the lead by a solitary point from Peter Jukes after finishing best placed of the Wrekinsport riders in 25:34. But even he couldn’t get close to visiting riders Ben Bramford-Hale of Newport Shropshire CC and Jack Ward of Sharrow CC split by a second, with 14 year old Bramford-Hale taking the plaudits in 24:30 for 7th spot overall.

Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport No.2

Conditions were tough in Round 2 of the Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as a strong and chilly south-westerly wind made things difficult for riders. That wind made no difference to was the winner was – just his time, as Tomos Hales stopped the watch on 22 minutes exactly, 21 seconds down on his Round 1 effort. Hales did note however that he finished strongly, with the tailwind bowling riders along the mile straight of the Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit.

The strength of Hales’ ride was shown by him being over two minutes clear of anyone else, with a close battle for runner-up spot between Ben Wood, crossing the line in 24:02, and Newport Shropshire CC’s George Coombes, just three seconds back and first Road Bike across the line. This week Peter Jukes got the better of Rich Smith thanks to Matt Price splitting the pair, as Jukes rose to the top of the Road Bike standings thanks to his 26:09 effort.

In the Women’s Series just one female was in competition – Hayley Wells, and despite declaring her 24:44 as ‘Rubbish’ post-race due to being 57 seconds down on her Round 1 time that belied the strength of her performance in character-building conditions as she finished 4th overall from a 15 rider field.

  • Hales has recently joined Telford Athletic Club, and as part of his signing conditions he persuaded three of that club’s runners to have a go. Fastest was Jordan Stamp in a very creditable 27:53.

Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport No.1

A rare ‘float’ evening saw the newly renamed Denso and Tern Cycles Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport off to a great start, with fast times all round, some keen competition in the Road Bike category, and a brand new season-long 2-Up competition added taking place at the same time. Back on the traditional Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit after the opening of Crudgington roundabout, Tomos Hales set out a solid defence of his Series Championship with a superb effort of 21 minutes 39 seconds, with nearest challenger Jonathan Mills-Keeling of Aerologic RT 32 seconds back.

Hales opened up a lead of a solitary point by beating 2024’s silver medallist Oli Freeman, who stopped the watch on 22:34 in his first effort on the course after joining the club last year. Hales wasn’t the only rider looking to hold onto a Championship as Hayley Wells opened up her defence of the Women’s Series with a superb 23:47.

The Road Bike Series opened in some style with a solitary second splitting Rich Smith from Peter Jukes, with Smith making his first ever appearance in this contest stopping the watch on 25:48, and with visiting Scottish rider Hamish MacLean of Mussellborough RCC taking the Overall win in 24:13.

The change to facilitate the Denso and Tern Cycles 2-Up Series has been an adjustment to the points, with both formats available in almost all Wrekinsport 10 mile club events (but with the exception of the County level 2-Up week where a different handicap trophy is in play to Wrekinsport pairs, and SCCA County-level points are also at stake). Rider’s best 12 scores will count towards the destination of trophies in the solo Series, whereas the best 5 scores will count towards the new 2-Up Series. Dave Moore and Matt Price made the initial running, registering a time of 26:57.

Denso & Tern Cycles Evening 5 TT

Wednesday 2nd April 2025

The opening event of the Wrekinsport club calendar saw riders partake in a fast and furious five mile loop of Admaston – Rushmoor Lane and Allscott as Tomos Hales took a solid win – although his plan to challenge Henri Bedford’s 10 minute 9 second course record set in April 2021 didn’t quite work out. Hales was stymied by a stiff and chilly easterly wind that hampered riders on the long steady climb from Allscott to the finish, eventually completing the circuit in 10:44.

Hales’ nearest challenger was Oli Freeman, whose 11:25 was just two seconds ahead of Wrekinsport club mate Phil Roberts in a tight battle for an ‘each way’ placing; whilst best female was Hayley Wells in 12:13.

The Road Bike category was also keenly fought, with Rich Smith taking a solid win in 13:02, eight seconds ahead of Peter Jukes on his first competitive time trial on a Road Bike, which looks like a good omen for the coming season.
